EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
