Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication report a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
